3rd Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive Kick-A-Thon:

This Saturday, our school will be taking part in our 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive Kick-A-Thon

Our mission is to deliver Thanksgiving Basket dinners directly to Military families in the San Diego area!

Date of Kick-A-Thon: October 23rd - 11 AM to 3:00 PM

A typical basket will include a turkey, bread, baked goods, beans, corn, cranberries, gravy, a roasting pan, and all other items necessary to make a fantastic dinner. Last year, we successfully achieved our goal of 100 baskets. In fact, we were able to provide 200 baskets.

This year, our goal is 250 Thanksgiving baskets for local military families who sacrifice so much for our freedom. With an extra effort, I know we can do it.

We will accomplish this by organizing all our human and financial resources. This project will require the generosity of as many people as possible. We are counting on all of our students to participate in the Kick-A-Thon. Each student has a Kick-A-Thon sponsorship sheet in their packet. Each student should go to neighbors, friends and relatives to gain as many sponsors as they can. Students are not required to obtain donations to participate. We want everyone to be involved. If you didn't receive a packet, please see me.

Your goal is to have them sponsor for each kick you perform at the Kick-A-Thon. If you are 7 and older your goal is to perform 1000 kicks (don't worry, you can do it), if you are 6 or under your goal is to perform 500 kicks (if you want, you can do more). If someone sponsors you .02/kick and you do 1000 kicks; that person would donate $20.00 to you. If they sponsor you .01/kick and you perform 1000 kicks; the donation to you would be $10.00, or they can just donate a fix amount.

If you like, you may also sponsor a basket or 2 yourself. Each Basket cost about $30.

The top money raiser will receive a 4' perpetual trophy. Last year's winner were Calvin and Kyle Ta.

LAST YEAR, EVERYONE WAS ABLE TO PERFORM ALL OF THEIR KICKS!

Make it a great day!

Thomas Thai

Happy 14th Anniversary to MMAA!

Greetings,

I hope you are having a great day.

14 years ago today, I took over the ownership of Miramar Martial Arts Academy. Has it really been that long? I am still amaze of what it has become. And, I am not slowing down just yet!

Looking back, I have to say I didn't really know what I was doing or got myself into. I just graduated from College and then got layoff from Quantum Group. I was working as a chemist at that time making carbon monoxide sensors.

I just had this crazy notion that I can do something positive in turning around MMAA (*). I knew that I wanted to have a place where people can come and learn and be challenged to do their best. Strive for Personal Excellence! I wanted to have a place as described in the Cheers Theme song "Sometimes you wanna go, where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came! You wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same...You wanna be , where everybody knows your name"

So, I took a chance. With a lot of luck, many lonely nights and support of many students, friends, and family members, MMAA has become a great community of positive energy and great friends. Many things have changed over the years, but my commitment, focus and belief are still the same.

Here are some members still strong and attending classes:
  • Rick and Wyonne Evans - member since opening day!
  • Tim Paige - member since opening day!
  • Tim Bennett - member since opening day! (my 1st white belt to achieve Dan Rank and still going strong)
  • Medy Wundrow - Since 6/21/97
  • Annette Ring - Since 11/4/97
  • John Sluder - Since 11/5/97
  • Shona Balfour - Since 2/14/98
  • Gary Wong - Since 4/29/98
  • Darno DeJohnette JR. - Since 12/22/98
  • Geoff and Jacquline Lizar - Since 8/23/99

I want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity and for your trust. You Rock!
With deepest appreciation,

Thomas Thai
(*) MMAA was originally owned by my Instructor, Master Lloyd Francis, and opened in 1991. I was assisting instructor in the last couple of years, then I took over the ownership.
